Old todo list (moved from readme.txt file).

Postby Janne Huttunen » Tue Dec 25, 2007 6:27 am

Here is the todo list which was in the Readme.txt file:

1. Locate listens file system changes and updates databases instantaneously (if someone provides
a code to modify databases efficiently, this will be implemented ASAP. Fileformat is described
here: http://www.uku.fi/~jmhuttun/files/devel ... _stuff.zip)
2. Read MFT structure directly (probable using libndff library, a library by the author of ndff).
3. Implementation of Total Commander plugin API (so that TC plug ins can be used with Locate)
4. Better window manager to handle presets (there is already a topic for this).
5. Shell extensions: context menu commands, toolbar in the taskbar for locate, interface as Explorer Extension (folders like Extensions.{692F0339-CBAA-47e6-B5B5-3B84DB604E87}, Toolbar containing searching options), Integration in the common File/Open dialogs
6. [ADDED] Searching while typing
7. Search inside archives (a library to access archives using C/C++ would be helpful)
8. Thumbnails [ADDED] and Tile view (do anyone need this?)
9. A document preview panel (TC plugins probable provides this)
10. POSIX style command line arguments for locate.exe and updtdb32.exe
11. History for searches (there is a topic for that)
12. Better way to check whether network drives are online (don't know how to do that)
13. Search files using mp3 tags etc (TC plugin API probable provides this)
14. Minimalized view
15. Non-db searches (I think that this is obsolete if 1. feature is implemented)
16. Delete drives from database
17. Toolbar for customizable actions
18. Store information about properties like user, Author, Comments, etc into databases.
19. Possible to specify time in Date/Size tab
20. Comments from jpg, mp3, etc files (for mp3, check this http://sourceforge.net/projects/id3lib) (TC plugins?)
21. "Do not show files and directories inside of hidden folders" option
22. Resolve file names in Recycle bin
23. EXiF search for images, search by dimensions of image (TC plugins?)
24. Advanced comboboxes (e.g., http://www.codeproject.com/cs/combobox/ ... Events.asp)
25. Update when computer is idle, HD level (similar to the current CPU level setting)
26. Locate keeps list which files are executed and search among them before going to use databases, sorting by how many times files are executed
27. Ordering using several criterias
28. Filters: for example, Å is be replaced by ae, aa or nothing at all
29. option to clear user-filters after each search, option to clear filter/ restore last filter by the click of a button
30. Open selected folder in the results list
31. Printing results
32. Possible to setup Windows' Task Scheduler task directly from Locate32
33. Replace the menu which appears when you right click the clock on Task Bar. This makes possible to use icon on right beside the clock for Locate on some Mac themes (see for example MacSearch).
34. Save and load results
35. Possible to use file names which are longer than 260 characters.

I would like to hear some comments about that list. For example, which items you tought to be the most important thing (and maybe earns own topic here). Or is there something you consider to be a bad idea and you wish to remove it from the list?

I was thinking that if the issue is the efficiency with which changes need to be incorporated into the main database, would it be possible to do this using a secondary database that includes only new changes to the filesystem? Since this database would be much smaller, even if it's not so efficient it could still be sufficiently fast. When performing a search, you would search both the main database and the smaller changed database. Then changes could be incorporated into the main database either when the system is found to be idling for a specified time and/or at a prescheduled time.

Yes, that is one good way to do that. What I have tought is that I could keep changes in memory (until db is written) instead of in database.

I'm looking forward to thumbnails. I was a bit surprised it wasn't there when I looked, but it's nice to see it on the todo list at least. :)

Item no 6 "searching while typing" is implemented in the latest beta version. If you have comments about this new feature, go to this topic.

First, i will say thanks for that wonderful desktop seach tool, its the best tool i have found for fast searching files.

I was happy reading item no. 13, searching of mp3 files including id3tag information. That would be one of the greatest feature of the tool, i don't know any programm which still has this feature? It would be fine if you can difference between searching in the artist, title, album,etc... position or in any of them.

That feature would make a mp3 database for me obsolete :D

Greetings and keep going on

Just a little note about TC plugins.

7 <- possible with packer plugins (WCX) but there is no standalone ZIP plugin
9 <- possible with lister plugins (WLX)
13, 20, 23 <- possible with content plugins (WDX)

There are also 4th type plugins called filesystem plugins (WFX) which allow to treat different objects as virtual file system:

- devices - media players, mobile phones, ...,
- Windows resources - Registry, services, processess, devices, installed applications, ...,
- network objects - e-mail accounts, web pages, databases, FTP servers, ...,
- other - passwords db, music db, Linux filesystems, ...,

If locate32 could support some of these it would blow away any competitor from the face of the Earth ;)
